Trade show graphic materials: fabric, vinyl and rigid boards compared
The same design can look very different printed on fabric, vinyl or board. The material affects colour, glare, weight, set-up and how the graphic survives travel. Here is what each common option is good for.

Printed fabric
Most modern booth graphics are polyester fabric printed by dye sublimation, which bonds the ink into the fibres. Fabric is light, folds small, does not reflect light much and is used for pop-up backdrops, tension fabric walls, table covers and towers. Colours can look slightly different from paper, so ask for a proof of the colours that matter most.
SEG and backlit fabric
SEG graphics have a thin silicone strip sewn around the edge that pushes into a slot in an aluminium frame, giving a tight, flat finish. In a lightbox frame the same kind of fabric is lit from behind, so the graphic glows and stands out in a bright hall. Backlit artwork may need adjusting, because light shining through changes how colours and dark areas look. See SEG in the glossary.
Vinyl
Vinyl is tough and often used for roll-up banners, outdoor banners and some wall graphics. A glossy finish can reflect hall lighting and camera flash, so a matte finish is usually the safer choice for anything people will photograph, such as a step and repeat.
Rigid boards
Foam board, PVC board and aluminium composite panels are printed directly or with a mounted print. They suit shell-scheme panels, signs, counter fronts and anything that must stay perfectly flat. They are heavier and bulkier to ship than fabric.

Questions
Questions
Is fabric or vinyl better for a trade show backdrop?
Fabric is the usual choice for backdrops: it is light, folds small and reflects less light. Vinyl is tough and works well for roll-ups and banners; choose a matte finish if people will photograph it.
What is an SEG graphic?
A fabric graphic with a silicone strip sewn around its edge that fits into a groove in an aluminium frame, giving a tight, flat finish. It is often used in backlit lightbox walls.
Do fabric graphics wrinkle?
Printed fabric folds for travel and creases usually relax once the graphic is stretched on its frame. Your printer can advise on care and steaming for their material.
